A dear friend and an investor put it as it is: “The mobility cat has been skinned in all the ways possible. So what do you do that is new?”
He was right in asking the question. The Mobility wave of today is what the Dot.com wave was in the end of the 90s. And yet, most of the problems related to urban mobility remain or have even worsened. This is because the underlying dominant narrative for mobility, especially urban mobility, is flawed. It served us well in the last century, but fails to remain fit-for-purpose in the 21st century. As long as our mobility systems continue to optimise for transit time between points A and B, the car will remain the hero. And then no amount of prefixes to the word “mobility” will suffice. We need to change that. Exponential Mobility came into being with an ambition to do just that.
Furthermore, by treating the transit time as a necessary evil, we undermine the potential usage of the 2-3 hours spent in local travel by a large share of urban populations globally. By reframing urban mobility, we can leverage this transit time to further social cohesion in our societies. We can catalyse local economies by bringing local businesses closer to their customers – the local citizens. And in doing so, we would also solve the congestion and pollution problems in the city systems.
We acknowledge that it is a grand vision. And this is precisely why we are devoting time to building the coalitions and partnerships, which will get us across the line. And you thought that the idea of skinning cats is what got us out of our beds every morning! 🙂
